What is ISO 55001?

Definition

ISO 55001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an asset management system. It sets out how an organization aligns physical assets with its objectives, manages risk and performance across the asset life cycle, and keeps the evidence needed to show the system works. Organizations can be certified against it by accredited bodies.

What it is

ISO 55001 belongs to the ISO 55000 family. ISO 55000 gives the overview and vocabulary, ISO 55001 sets the requirements, and ISO 55002 gives guidance on applying them.

The standard follows the common ISO management system structure: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. It asks an organization to define what value its assets must deliver and to make decisions about acquisition, operation, maintenance and renewal on that basis.

It does not prescribe a particular maintenance method or software. It asks for a coherent system with documented objectives, plans, risk treatment and evidence.

Who it applies to

ISO 55001 is used by utilities, transport operators, airports, hospitals, universities, public estates and industrial firms with large asset bases. Some adopt it for certification, others use it as a framework for asset management without seeking a certificate.

What evidence it needs

Auditors look for an asset register, defined performance and risk criteria, plans that follow from them, and records showing actual performance is monitored and acted on.

  • An asset register with condition and criticality
  • Performance indicators for key assets
  • Records of maintenance, failures and corrective actions
  • Management review and continual improvement evidence

How Aqueduct helps

Aqueduct supplies measured performance and condition records for the assets it monitors. Your team and your certification body run the management system and the audit.

  • Asset observability: live state, run hours and condition per asset, refreshed every 60 seconds
  • aQ PredictIQ condition trends that support risk and renewal decisions
  • Command history and verified closures as a record of action taken, where control is enabled, with owner approval
  • aQ Assurance reports that export performance evidence for management review

No. It is voluntary, though some regulators, contracts or owners may expect it or a comparable approach. Check the requirements that apply to your sector.

ISO 55001 is a management system standard. A CMMS is software that records assets and work. A CMMS can support an ISO 55001 system, but it is not the system itself.

No. Aqueduct supplies measured asset performance and condition evidence. Certification is decided by an accredited certification body after auditing your management system.
