What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management systems. It sets out a plan, do, check, act cycle in which an organization reviews its energy use, sets an energy baseline, tracks energy performance indicators and shows continual improvement in energy performance over time.
What it is
ISO 50001 describes how an organization builds and runs an energy management system. It does not set a fixed savings target. Instead it asks the organization to understand where energy goes, decide what to improve, act, and prove that energy performance has improved against a defined starting point.
The core building blocks are the energy review, which identifies significant energy uses, the energy baseline, which is the reference period, and energy performance indicators, called EnPIs, which track performance against that baseline. Relevant variables such as weather, production or occupancy are used to normalize results so that comparisons are fair.
Certification is optional and is carried out by accredited third party certification bodies. Many organizations adopt the framework without certifying.
Who it applies to / where it is used
ISO 50001 is used by manufacturers, campuses, hospitals, data centers, airports, utilities and commercial property owners. Some energy efficiency programs and public procurement rules recognize it, and in several jurisdictions a certified system can be one route to meeting audit obligations. Check the current local rule for how it is recognized where you operate.
How it is measured / what evidence it needs
Auditors look for a working system, not just a policy. The strongest evidence is measured data that ties actions to results.
- A documented energy review naming significant energy uses
- An energy baseline with the relevant variables used to normalize it
- EnPIs tracked at a frequency that matches the energy use
- Records of action plans and the measured result of each action
- Internal audit and management review records
How Aqueduct helps
Aqueduct supplies the measured layer that an ISO 50001 system depends on. You run the management system; Aqueduct supplies the evidence.
- Metered baselines by site, building, system and asset, built from meters, sub-meters and BMS points
- Weather-normalized baselining using regression on degree days, or a day-one baseline from 6 to 12 months of utility bills, through aQ EnergySmart
- EnPIs tracked continuously with 60-second telemetry, with savings verified at the meter after each action
- Exportable records through aQ Assurance for internal audit and management review
